1. ARE
YOU TOURING THE LAST MONTH'S ISN'T YOU (FOR THIS REASON I'M WRITING TO YOURS
JUST NOW). TELL ME ABOUT THIS GIGS, DO YOU PLAYED IN USA THIS TIME? SOME FRINDS
TOLD ME THAT YOU'D PLAY IN SUDAMERICA, WHAT HAPPENED FRIEND.
Nothing happened, because we didn't have any shows in the US or Southern
America. Maybe next year.
2. COULD YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE
"LATEX CULT" COVER? IT REMEMBER TO ME TO SEPULTURA "CHAOS A.D.
AND SOME VOIVOD TOO. WHAT'S IT MEANING?
Actually I have no idea what's going on on that cover. I wasn't in the band
that time the cover was made. The 'artwork' is piled up with a mask of Mika's
face and some 'deceased' pussies, penises, and all kind of garbage. It's weird
but looks cool.
3. JANI, HOW DID YOU END UP JOINING IMPALED
NAZARENE? WHAT HAPPENED WITH TANELI? HE RETURN TO HIS SENTENCED BAND ISN'T HE?
IMPALED NAZARENE guys asked me first to do a tour with them 'cos Taneli seemed
to be too busy with SENTENCED. For some reason Taneli left the band when they
still were at Tico-Tico Studios recording the album (and couple of months later
he left Senteced too). So it was quite self-evident to me to join the band.
4. WHAT HAPPENED WITH KIMMO? DO YOU HAVE MORE
CHANGES ON YOUR LINE UP?
Kimmo left (or was kicked out) the band in the summer 1995, when they were
about recording a mini-album or something like that. After first day in a
studio they had a fight, and because of that Kimmo left and the recording was
never finished. No other line-up changes until I replaced Taneli in February
1996.
5. WHY MIKKA LIVE IN BELGIUM? HE DIDN'T PLAN TO
LIVE WITH YOURS IN FINLAND IN THE FUTURE?
Mika is married with a belgian woman, and for sure he's much happier over
there.
6. DO YOU HAVE ANY CONTACT WITH BULL METAL
(WARMASTER RCDS) AFTER HE RELEASED THE EP OF IMPALED N. WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION
(I THINK)? WHAT HAPPENED?
I've been in contact with him few times without any problems. I didn't know
that he has released that bootleg 7". Even it's made without permission of
any Impaled member, and the sound on that record is pretty bad, I like it. Bootlegs
rules, but this' only my opinion. I think Mika ain't that excited of any
Impaled bootlegs. At least because the sounds always sucks, and the profit goes
somewhere it shouldn't go.
7. HOW WAS OSMOSE BEEN TREATING YOU THROUGH THE
YEARS?
Really well. They are really like friends of us today, as we've met the Osmose
staff several times, drinked together and so on. They're absolutely coolest
record label in the whole underground.
8. WHAT ABOUT YOUR LATEX CULT ALBUM AND IT'S
DIFFERENCES WITH SUOMI FINLAND PERKELE CD?
'Latex Cult' is more straightforward stuff compared to 'SFP'. 'Latex Cult'
don't have any softer tracks like 'Blood Is Thicker...', which is just good. Personally
I prefer much more 'Latex Cult'.
9. WHAT'S THE SOUTH AMERICA IMAGE IN EUROPA? WHAT
DO YOU KNOW ABOUT PERU?
I don't know anything about Peru, except there was a lot of indians and
pyramids some thousand years ago. Are they still in there, in a jungle? I think
europeans mostly think there's just millions of poor people, thieves, drug
dealers etc trash. I really would like to go there some day, go see the
pyramids.
10. TELL ME ABOUT PLAN E, THE PROJECT BAND FROM
YOU AND REIMA. MIKKA AND ANTILLA HAS ANY BAND PROJECTS TOO? WHAT'S ABOUT
DIABOLOS RAISING?
PLAN E is weird band. Our music is very hard to categorize which is just good. It's
something like gothic rock mixed with an industrial sound, and filled with some
jazzy stuff. I write the music, sing, and play bass. Reima play drums and his
girlfriend Reetta plays keyboards. We've this far released two CD-EP's and one
7. We just finished the recordings for the upcoming 6-song mini-LP. I play also
bass in an old finnish HC-band called IRSTAS (which have also a new LP out
now). Mika has the band called RAISM (ex-DIABOLOS RAISING), but I think he's
going to quit that band soon if he haven't done that already. Anttila has a
band called TÄTI HARRIETIN ILOINEN KUOLEMA (english translation could be
something like: Aunt Harriet's Merry Death) which is playing quite ordinary
guitar pop with finnish lyrics.
11. HAVE YOUR BAND SUFFERED DAMAGES CAUSED BY A
FAN? TELL ME ANY OTHER ANECDOTE WITH THE BAND OR SOME FUNNY ADVENTURES HEPPENED
TO YOU?
This is a question you should actually ask from Mika. There's always many kind
of funny things going on when the band is on the road. Once IMPALED guys almost
got killed by Hell's Angels somewhere in Italy. We've met some finnish people
(unknown to us) in countries like Germany and Belgium. That's weird but cool.
12. WITH WHOM BAND DO YOU HAVE AN EXCELLENT
RELATION (THE MOST FRIENDS OF YOURS)?
TERVEET KÄDET (You might have heard of them? The most popular Finnish punk
band!?!) is one. We share the rehearsal room with them. They are really cool
guys and their music is amazing! IMMOLATION and CANNIBAL CORPSEs are cool guys.
We also had some really good time last December with GEHENNAH and ANGEL CORPSE
on tour.
13. ARE YOU A VIOLENT PERSONS? HAVE YOU HAD BAD
RELATIONS WITH SOME BAND IN SOME OF YOUR GIGS?
Impaled used to have some sort of fight couple of years ago on stage in
finland, but at that time I've been in the band, we haven't had any kind of
problems with anyone.
14. IS IT TRUE THAT MIKA RECEIVED THREATS FROM
EMPEROR SOME TIME AGO? HAVE IMPALED N. HAD PROBLEMS WITH OTHER
BANDS/ORGANIZATIONS, ETC.?
I don't think so. No problems with anyone.
15. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE UNDERGROUND, WHEN
DID YOU DISCOVER ZINES? WHAT WERE SOME EARLY ZINES THAT YOU READ? ANY EARLY
CONCERTS YOU REMEMBER?
I really don't remember. I think it was about 1988-89 I got first demos and
'zines in my hands. I formed my first band at the same time. For sure the main
inspiration came from those underground bands. I cannot remember any names, I
apologize.
16. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE SCENE IN
FINLAND AND THE SUCCES OF AMORPHIS?
Finnish scene sucks as well as Amorphis, with or without their success.
17. TELL US ABOUT THE LAST VIDEO CLIPS THAT DO
YOU HAVE, WHERE WAS THEY RECORDED, ABOUT PRODUCTION?
They were filmed in London by David Palser (same guy who did the 'Latex'-cover)
in March 1996. It was really cool & fun to do it, but we're not that
satisfied of the final result. I think the directors outlook of the clips was
just a bit different than ours. The clips looks like quite cheaply done and
messy, don't you think?
18. WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU?
I wake up about 10.00 AM every morning. Smoke some cigarettes and drink
2-3 cups of strong black coffee. I check out & do my mail, listen music,
write lousy lyrics, play guitar a bit, go to rehearsal room or record shops. I
watch a lot of movies & sometimes read something...just typical shit every
day. As you see, not much goat worshipping etc. true acting here.
19. JANI, NOW TALKING ABOUT YOUR
LABEL, TELL ME HOW DID YOU BEGAN WITH E RCDS, HOW MUCH SEARCHING DID YOU FOR
YOUR FIRST SIGNING, WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR STUFF PRESSED AND HOW MUCH DOES IT
COST YOU?
At first, in the spring 1994, I was just curious to know about the process of
making a vinyl record. At the time I didn't have any experiences or contacts,
so it was quite hard to start. I compiled some garbage-tapes of our old band
called BELIAL and did a small (500 pcs) 7" pressing. Back then, I didn't
plan to continue releasing anything but after three years I'm still doing the
same...I've never put too much energy to find any new bands for my label, so
mostly I just release the music of my own. I get my vinyls pressed in Czech
Rep., and CD's in Austria.
20. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST AND WORST SELLING
ITEM? WILL YOU SELL MOSTLY ANYTHING?
All of my pressings have been something between 40-1140. The best sellers have
this far been the first PLAN E CD-EP, and OBFUSCATION 7" EP, both have
sold about little bit over 900 copies which is quite okay for me, as this is
just hobby for me and yet far away from real business.
21. HAVE YOU HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH RIP-OFFS? TELL
ME NAMES?
Sometimes, which is very annoying. Michael Piesch & Lethal Records
(Austria), Torodd Fuglesteg & Arctic Serenades Records (Scotland, ex-Norway!!!),
John-Erik Aslaksen & Effigy Records (Norway), Jon Cabrera & Radical
Production (USA), and about ten more which I'm not 100% sure yet. Next year the
list will be much longer...
22. HAVE YOU LISTEN SOME INTERESTING BAND
RECENTLY, THERE SOME BAND THAT HAVE IMPACT TO YOU? WHICH BAND WOULD YOU LIKE TO
HAVE ON YOUR LABEL?
Well, I'm not dreaming about signing any band on E at the moment.
23. TELL ME THE NEAR FUTURE OF IMPALED NAZARENE
AND YOUR LABEL?
We're now writing new songs for IMPALED album #5 which is scheduled to be
released in the spring of 1998. Then touring and other stuff. I'll start to
releasing full lenght CD's next year...At least we'll celebrate the releases of
PLAN E's debut album and IRSTAS' album re-release on CD. There has also been some
talking of albums with the bands called DEATH TRIP (ultra slow & hard
project of TERVEET KÄDET -members), and SILMÄOSASTO (weird & very original
finnish industrial/metal band). Yep, lots of things to do next year.
